Mechanical/Hydraulic Shop

Washburn's Boat Yard
has been outfitting vessels for safe, comfortable offshore passages and self-sufficient cruising in remote areas for over two decades. We are dealers for Naiad hydraulic stabilizers and thrusters, Sidepower DC thrusters, Volvo gas, Volvo Penta diesel, Northern Lights generators, Village and Spectra watermakers, Cruisair, Sea Land, Mercruiser, Key Power get home drives, Marquipt davits, cranes, masts and arches.

Our hydraulic shop, aside from stabilizer and hydraulic thruster installations, which we have been performing since 1989, is capable of designing integrated systems. One system we installed utilized a PTO on both a 20 KW gen set and a 12 KW gen set. Either or both generators could be run to power the windlass, davit or a get home drive.

In the summer of '08 we had as customers a couple with vast cruising experience who had just purchased a 53' single engine trawler. Their experience indicated to them that the vessel should have alternate means of propulsion. We discovered that the optional extended range tankage precluded the installation of a wing engine in the engine room. After much research we installed a 75 hp Volvo diesel in the lazarette with a hydraulic pump mounted in place of the transmission. The pump drove the Key Power motor mounted on the main shaft. This system yielded six knots with excellent helm control, two attributes often missing with wing engine installations.

Many vessels built in the Far East during the eighties are now in their twenties. It is around this vintage that certain problems begin to show up. Many of these boats have fuel tanks that are rusting through while others have their deck cores full water and teak deck planking coming adrift. These are otherwise fine vessels and a proper repair is well worth doing. These same vessels can benefit from being re-powered with modern diesels. We are dealers for Volvo Penta. The Volvo "common rail" electronically controlled diesels are a wonder of smooth, quiet power that was unimaginable just a few years ago.
